An analysis of applications under the Broadband, Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) grant program inside Texas reveals that a satellite company owned by Elon Musk could become a major recipient of broadband grant dollars here..

According to information from the Texas Broadband Development Office, the application deadline in Texas recently passed for the “Benefit of the Bargain” round of BEAD funding, and 70 entities applied for funding.

In August, the online industry journal Telecompetitor published an analysis by Texas Telephone Association chair Wes Robinson, in which he examined the totality of the eligible locations for which those 70 entities had submitted applications.

At the top of the list was low earth orbit (LEO) satellite broadband provider SpaceX, owned by Musk. SpaceX requested funding for 244,596 locations, according to analysis.

Following SpaceX was AMG Technology Investment Group/Nextlink Internet, which applied for funding for 204,846 locations, according to the analysis.

Third on the list was another LEO satellite operator — Amazon Kuiper — which requested funding for 160,304 locations, according to the analysis.

Other major players on the list include Astound, AT&T, Comcast, Consolidated, and Frontier, according to the report. Also on the list were rural telecom providers, rural electric companies, fixed wireless providers, and cable companies, as well as local governments and counties.
