The Railroad Commission of Texas has called upon the public to weigh in on the regulatory agency’s performance and mission during a series of virtual “Listening Sessions” every other month.
Subject matter experts from the commission’s staff will be on hand to answer questions. The agency has scheduled the inaugural session for Wednesday, Nov. 12, from noon to 1:30 p.m. CST.
“The remote Listening Sessions are an important opportunity for Texans to speak directly with us,” said Wei Wang, RRC Executive Director, in a prepared statement. “We want to better understand the perspectives of those we serve, and these conversations help us listen, learn and lead with the best interest of Texans in mind.”
The RRC’s Office of Public Engagement is organizing the virtual sessions, and each will feature a brief overview of the Railroad Commission’s regulatory functions followed by an opportunity for participants to comment and ask questions. Registration is required for participation.
The Railroad Commission, along with its other duties relating to the state’s oil and gas industries, has responsibility for the regulation of gas utilities and gas utility and gas pipeline rates. The agency does not, however, oversee railroads. The mismatch between the agency’s mission and its name has been a source of controversy for decades, with some public advocates and lawmakers saying it has contributed to general confusion among Texans about the agency’s responsibilities.
