The City of Caldwell’s municipal utility has joined the ERCOT System, according to a March 12 announcement from the grid operator.

Serving Burleson County about 80 miles northeast of Austin, the Caldwell utility delivers electricity to approximately 2,000 premises and 4,000 residents. Before the transition, the utility was part of the Eastern Interconnection within the Mid-continent Independent System Operator (MISO) region.

“This transition reflects strong collaboration between the City of Caldwell, the Public Utility Commission of Texas, and ERCOT to ensure a smooth integration into the ERCOT System,” said Pablo Vegas, ERCOT President and CEO.

Caldwell’s move to ERCOT, also known as the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, was authorized by the PUC on April 24, 2025. According to the agency, the city utility will continue serving its residential, business, and industrial customers as it did prior to the move. The agency also said the Lower Colorado River Authority is overseeing that segment of the state’s transmission system connecting Caldwell to ERCOT.

Local customers should visit the City of Caldwell’s website for more information. Additional updates regarding the integration of the Caldwell load can be found in PUC Docket No. 57517.
